“Sports Massage and Assessment”
Massage Table, Sheets/Towels, Oil/Cream
Snacks and Drinks (ie water) as needed, none will be provided
This class will look at practical aspects of working with athletes whether they are weekend-warriors or Professionals in their sport. We will be looking at the massage component as only one aspect of working with athletes. In addition, we will do visual and physical assessment to identify some issues clients may be dealing with, which will help guide your time with them. We will also spend time on stretching, learning what type to use on clients due to energy expenditure. Time permitting, will look at additional ways of serving the needs of clients
Come learn to do things “outside the box”.
Items to bring – table, cover sheet, large towel, bolster. Dress in activity clothing or comfortable clothing to work through.

INSTRUCTOR: Mike Walters
Mike L. Walters, LMT, received his massage training at The Alternative Conjunction School of
Massage in 1994 and his license through the State of Florida in 1995, and Pennsylvania in 2011
(start of licensure in PA). He has continued study with national/international instructors focusing
on sports bodywork for the competing athlete. Mr. Walters maintains a practice; An Athlete’s
Edge, Sports Massage & Therapeutic Bodywork in Mechanicsburg, PA and focuses on the needs
of the competing athlete, active individual whether they are a weekend warrior or
Olympic/Professional level athlete. Mr. Walters has served at the Salt Lake City Olympic
Winter Games and the Athens Olympic Summer Games with the International Sports Massage
Team. Most recently he was part of the US Olympic Committee (USOC) Volunteer Medical
Team at the Vancouver Winter Games, stationed in the Whistler Clinic. He has traveled
extensively to serve athletes at National and International level venues. Clients with medical
complications are seen as well. Mr. Walters also maintains licensure as a Physical Therapy
Assistant (PTA) and Emergency Medical Technician-Basic.
Mr. Walters also served with AMTA MERT (Massage Emergency Response Team) at two sites
of the 911 attacks. He was deployed to Shanksville with 5 other MERT therapists under the FBI
and then called to Ground Zero to serve as Supervisor of the massage area under the Mayor’s
Emergency Response System at Respite Center 1.
